Guest Post: DIY Painted Curtains

Hey new friends!

My name is Sarah and I blog over at Limited Space Organizing. I bought these solid cream curtains over a year ago for my husband's and my last apartment.  They were super cheap and a quick buy.  I just needed something to block some of the light coming in.  When we moved into our new apartment, I put them up and they completely blended into our walls because they are the exact same color.

Having all of this cream in our bedroom makes the room look very blah and boring.  I knew I had to add some kind of color to this space, but of course, in an apartment building, you can't paint the walls.  So, when I saw that you can paint your curtains, I knew that was what I wanted to do!

Supplies:

-1 qt of colored paint
-Small paint roller
-Drop cloth
-Small paint tray
-Painter's tape

First, I had to think of what color I wanted to do.  I decided to go with a light blue color because the accent wall in our room is a dark brown, so I didn't want anymore dark colors in there.  My husband and I went to the store and bought all of the supplies and I went to work on my new curtains!

I laid the curtain flat on the drop cloth and started taping.  I used the seam at the top as a guide for the first piece of tape.  After laying the first piece down, I measured 6 in. and put down another piece, and so on.  Then I started painting!

Once the painting was complete, I put a little fan under the curtain to start the drying process.  The drying took a long time, so this project ended up taking me all day to do.  Once both panels were dry and done I hung them up, and I love them!  Super easy project, and a really cheap alternative to painting the walls!

THINGS I LEARNED:

• Don't use a plastic drop cloth!-as I was painting, the plastic moved around making me miss a few places and having to go back and touch up
• Use thicker curtains-my curtains were really thin so the paint bled through onto the plastic, so if you have thick curtains, it shouldn't bleed through
• Use a fan to dry-since I painted cloth, it took a lot longer for the curtains to dry, putting the fan under the curtain to dry really helped speed up the drying process!
